do you know that the twin sharp blades of your smile cut me everytime you use it to disarm people?

i guess not.

you did not even notice my bare skin vulnerable to pain when i surrendered myself to you.

“i am he as you are he as you are me and we are all together”

the african-american dad echoes lennon as he marches with his kids inside the subway train car filled with people who have just embarked on their own temporary journey to rest.
he leads his band composed of his family of 3 kids who all looks like the spawns of will smith.
the tallest kid hits the bongo, the medium sized one shakes the tambourines, and the smallest holds a white plastic bag stained with the bold “thank you” text in red.

the african american dad strums his guitar hard and continues to belt out the beatles’ iam the walrus together with his sons as back-up vocals. for more than five minutes, this family bonded by music is able to catch the attention of the drifting spirits of people who have just escaped from their shackles of work.

after the band’s prolonged rendition of the song, the dad starts to appeal to the audience, asking for whatever amount they can give to help them go back to manhattan. for whatever reason, their family happens to be in los angeles and was not able to go back to their place because of financial constraints. it has been a year since i first heard their brief story. same train route, same season, only this time, the kids have grown bigger and they do not carry their huge bags anymore.

the smallest kid roams around the train car with his plastic bag. at this point, most people who are wide awake and entertained just minutes ago fall asleep or pretend to be asleep. silence starts to reign inside the train car again. i am not asleep, but my eyes are half closed.

i could have given them a dollar but i do not carry any money with me. cards save me from the burden of carrying bills and coins. this band provides a better show than that person in mohawk who claims to be a struggling musician who strums his guitar in a frantic, random, any-kid-can-do-it kind of way. they sing way better than the old guy who would always appear drunk and try to serenade the air of the train with his hoarse voice.

after a few stops, the family exits the train.

this reminds me, i should get some coins when i get home.

the panning shot

ex suitor who became the girlfriend of your girlfriend now have babies and is now settled at london. highschool classmate whose soul possessed the body of a dwarf and who used to be the bull’s eye of leprechaun jokes is now inches taller than me. i have no idea how he did it but what used to be a chipmunky voice is converted into deep baritone big brother kind of voice. pretty faces in highschool are now housemoms. some college buddies are now proud moms and dads. some friends will be graduating from their master’s degree. ex groupmate was murdered at their house. person j is now married. person z and p are now in a relationship. mister wholesome virgin is now a father of 3 kids.

when the world beyond your focus seems to move fast, you are viewing your life in a panning shot kind of way.

you know, when time and all the other things around you appears to be zooming in high speed when you appear stationary, that’s picturing your life using a panning shot.

they say it best when drunk

ex college super professor is right, obsession kills.
a child’s obsession is irritating. adults will kill out of obsession if it proves necessary for their cause.
the movie wicker park demonstrates it in a nice way. it says that love and obsession do not mix well. not as cunning as it seems in real life, but yeah, obsession and its adverse effects narrated on film is cool to see on a hot weekend.
methinks that when you see a growing obsession in your yard, do try to cut it down immediately down the roots.

when sober, this friend is as calm a lamb. when intoxicated, he’s a blabbermouth from the underworld.
he doesn’t curse, but he releases the most piercing words that he can summon from the abyss of his subconscious. for instance, the lochness hiding under his soul screams about his grudge against his girlfriend who constantly hurts him. now that’s the power of alcohol.

old uncle henry used to have visions of a prince riding a white horse giving him instructions to dig the back lot of our ancestor’s house. the prince told him that treasures beyond our imagination lie beneath the bed of soil on our backyard. days after he discussed his visions with the family, a group of diggers dug their way beneath the soil for weeks. one day, old uncle henry got drunk and decided to stop the diggings. he said that each treasure to be unearthed will cost a life in the family.

the case of the failed nikon fg

when your classic nikon fg manual slr camera fails to provide you with any developed negative from your shots, get another cam and take a picture of it instead.

on frames: classic nikon fg

thanks to my generous officemate, i am now able to test if i have any skill with film photography.

so far, the camera has given me 2 blank film rolls after i had my shots developed on a nearby shop.

the mechanism seems to run smooth and i am pretty sure that i have loaded the film properly, carefully placing the holes on the sprockets, and making sure that the film is locked and advances forward on each fire of the shutter button, but blank frames from the negatives would always greet me.

pothead

the daily subway train ride usually takes only 20 minutes from noho to downtown but the unadulterated feeling of trance that embraced me today made it seem like a 2 hour ride that charged my systems full. the experience was surreal. i suspect the overwhelming feeling of happiness that showers me each morning is responsible for that certain feeling of trance.

i woke up one station away from my stop. sitting beside me is an african-american woman wearing heavily-tinted sunglasses. she cradled a crumpled white plastic bag on the skin of her lap. the vapors coming from her body, her breath, her hair, her clothes- almost everything smelled like pot. my seatmate smells like she’s been sniffing pot non-stop the whole week. she must be high, bobbing her head repeatedly till she reached 7th street.

i must be high, i have been smiling by myself for weeks. i always feel light, high, nasa alapaap.
subconsciously, i bob my head up and down to the songs of the beatles.

monster e.d.

you had me in a few sips.

you are superman whose destiny is to defeat the spawns of morpheus in my blood.
you promise to take me from the abyss of slumber above the great heights of self consciousness,

but lo and behold

just after minutes of encounter, you become doomsday.
you send tremors to my joints, you strip my muscles of their will to move, you cloud my head with random thoughts distant from the present, you throw my senses in a limbo.

your marriage with my body early this morning gives birth to the seemingly perpetual battle of the spirit and the body. the spirit is alive, the body is half-dead, both claiming a place at the seat of dominance.

roberts, owen, pawned!

the scene that strikes me most is not the fluid sparring of lines between julia roberts and clive owen keeping their poker faces to study each other’s motives and actions, but that scene where owen and roberts are seated like the king and the queen of an empty palace, only minutes after realizing that they were outsmarted and used by the guys whom they think they manipulated the whole time.

i love how the pair concluded their fate with “at least i have you” as the camera zooms out in slow motion.

although ms roberts’ charm is as dim as most of the night lights in the movie, her curvier figure, her mona lisa smile, and her julia roberts face still provide ample light to brighten up the movie. clive owen
compliments ms roberts’ presence on screen not far from their compatibility in the movie closer.

an appropriate alternative title for duplicity is complexity. the non-linear timeline of the film, occasionally jumping from the future back to the past then forward to the present then back to the future, could defamiliarize the audience expecting the usual twists of a spy thriller or a romantic comedy flick. the plot is not that hard to follow. roberts and owen, two corporate spies working for rival companies, conspired to play as double agents , as spies working in all sides in order to get the formula for a medical breakthrough that could make them a couple of million dollars richer. the time jumps make it appear as if things are working well as planned, but fate is a bitch. on the last 20 minutes run of the reel, the film will try to juxtapose the scattered pieces of the story and drop the huge water balloon of revelations down the floor with a loud splat. it was quick, it was messy, and at the end, it all seems like a big joke (not an effective joke though).

heart burn

the heart burns whenever you fail to digest the things that the universe feeds on you.
it is not because of the overwhelming layers of emotions that coat your heart.
no, it is not the early warning of death. your chest aches, your muscles contract, your breathing is limited and your heart burns because you failed to chew every bit of the world, the solar system, the galaxy, and the universe in your life. indigestion fails you, not the lack of love, you silly.

that pretty monster

on the frame, arjei posing as a schmexy ginormica wannabe on the subway

hands down to dreamworks animation and paramount pictures for bringing the cutest and the schmexiest 3d animation monster on big screen- susan “ginormica” murphy (voiced by reese witherspoon). arjei and i can’t help but ogle at ginormica’s glittery spandex body-fit suit and wonders how the squid-like alien named gallaxhar clothed her that way.

the message: you’ll never know when you’ll become a monster. and when the world calls you a freak for being one, don’t scare them. instead, show them how monsters can rock, roll and save the world from alien invasion!

monsters vs aliens is a perfect movie during those times that you feel alienated in your own world or whenever your closest friends brand you as a monster. seriously this movie could take off the detrimental stress away from your system. not a big-time feel good movie, but it is good enough to pack an ample amount of action, adventure, heart and lots of comedy in more or less 100 minutes.

no extra brains needed. just watch, enjoy and have a good laugh.

sister dance with shiva

anne hathaway’s performance as the prodigal daughter who has been dancing with shiva in and out of rehab for years is haunting. in the movie rachel getting married, kym (anne hathaway) comes back for a weekend vacation to attend her sister rachel’s wedding. in the process, family members suddenly find themselves looking for the missing pieces that could provide answers to the seemingly blank spaces in the puzzle of their lives.

the film’s compelling power can be attributed to its naturalistic, documentary style framed by jenny lumet’s script made solid by the raw, outstanding performances of the cast and was filled with emotions by the ensemble of the soundtrack’s instruments and vocals. it draws you deep into the family, inside their lives, to their dramas, through their fears, into their happiness.

rachel getting married is painful, refreshing and cathartic all at the same time. it is about surviving the dance with shiva and realizing that you need not find and fit all of the pieces of the puzzle together to find answers in life. sometimes, seeing the big picture of life with missing pieces makes it more beautiful.
